Connected to Context – Barfold Estate by Layan Architecture
As an idyllic place of pause amongst the vines, Barfold Estate is a unique accommodation offering immersed amongst nature. Layan Architecture draws from the rural vernacular in proposing an aptly fitting form, sitting long and linear, perched overlooking the adjacent dam.
Stripping back any ornate or elaborate detailing, Barfold Estate offers connection to its surrounds as a reflection of context, allowing an immersion in place. The continual gabled and linear form is reminiscent of many of the sheds and outbuildings within distance, and yet is created through a considered refinement with a residential focus. Allowing guests of the winery to stay on site when visiting, the space combines a familiar warmth together with a raw expression of materiality and an outward focus to the surrounds.
Located within two hours drive north of Melbourne amongst the Heathcote wine region, Barfold Estate is an expression of simplicity. Just as the journey out of the city is a search for calmness and disconnection, the space becomes a reflection of that clarity. Combining a rustic expression using reclaimed timber external rudiments, the outer shell is left untreated to encourage an engagement with the elements and weather over time, welcoming a natural patina. The interior, however, is formed from another approach. Lined in ply timber boards, a similar warmth is created, yet through a crisper and more contemporary rigour. The polished concrete flooring throughout anchors the space as a robust base for visitors, while layered textiles and textures add interest throughout.
With an open sensibility, the living, dining and kitchen spaces all flow into one another, while two large guest rooms help to divide the overall linear form up. Moments to ponder have been considered throughout, with directed views out into the landscape and integrated bench seating within the glazing, while the ritual of bathing also incorporates a view. Allowing direct connections to sunlight throughout the day and orienting the overall form to maximise solar gains in the process, the internal comfort of guests is tempered passively.
