Celebrating Togetherness – Beaconsfield Parade House by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects

Combining three generations into the one home, Beaconsfield Parade House focuses on connection and the gesture of togetherness in the sculpting of its next chapter. Jackson Clements Burrows Architects extends the relevance of an existing heritage home to allow for a multi-layered brief, accommodating a diverse combination of personalities.

Aligned with views out and an internal focus within, Beaconsfield Parade House combines alterations and additions to an existing home. Already occupied by a heritage-era home on site, the expansion required a level of considered sensitivity to ensure the proposal sat appropriately and responsive. Whilst the original home remains in place, it is opened significantly, reaching deeper lengthways and upward to add an additional level. The addition aims to positively contribute to the streetscape, neither dominating the existing context nor ignoring it, instead seeing a similar silhouette emerge with glowing amber tones poking out, hinting at the activity happening within. As the coming together of various generations within the one home, Jackson Clements Burrows Architects has carved a warm and timeless aesthetic, robust enough for family life.

Beaconsfield Parade House retains the existing formality of the heritage for use in the more still and quiet spaces of the home. With its natural separation inherited from the planning of its origins, it is the ideal place for retreat and seclusion. The addition, however, speaks to a more contemporary way of living, allowing for openness and connection in a more cohesive manner. A shared living, dining and kitchen space sits at the end of a journey through various spaces, generously connected to the carefully landscaped elements of the site.

A mostly monochromatic palette of materiality is given warmth and depth using timber and curved features, whilst the polished concrete acts as the forgiving flooring foundation for the knocks of family life. Needing to accommodate multiple generations throughout, the home stretches upward, adding an additional level and embedding a sense of separation in the process. The arrangement of spaces throughout intentionally crafts autonomy for the occupants, allowing them to live apart but also together. The display of an existing and extensive art collection acts as a binding gesture, whilst the outdoor area is both a welcomed balance to the internal spaces and a place of reprieve throughout the day.
