Inviting Symmetry – Belfield Duplex by HA Design and Mattone Construction
Balancing the raw and textural nature of the encasing concrete façade, Belfield Duplex incorporates warm and light insertions to incite an atmosphere of invitation. HA Design works with Mattone Construction to propose a generous and robust structure.
Belfield Duplex is a harmonious and considered insertion into the streetscape. In its Belfield setting, the home occupies the site that previously saw a singular heritage dwelling and maintains a similar sense of proportion and scale. The intentional use of masonry concrete and warm timber sees both materials featured externally and internally, with aesthetic support from a curated landscape setting. By considering the site in its entirety, HA Design brings a sense of rigour and formality to the project that is balanced by the natural elements.
Conceived by an interest in symmetry, the resulting home is carved as an individualistic presence among the other residences of the area. Whilst the upper levels sit pushed back from the entry, an open and solid balcony allows the upper level to spill out beyond the building edge. On the lower level, a wall of timber battens welcomes visitors where the entry void is scooped out from the façade. With architectural, construction and landscape disciplines so closely intersecting on this project, the design vision is brought to life from a shared and cohesive base.
Whilst the exterior elements of the building reflect strength and stability, the interior aims to create a welcoming series of spaces. The external combination of timber and concrete is also used internally, where large glazing elements open to the rear and surrounding garden spaces, creating a constant connection to the surrounding environment. An ideal foundation for family life, large format tiling is laid throughout, sustaining the narrative of a robust and solid home.
