Exclusive to ownworld, Canadian design house Bensen is anchored in both technical knowledge and a considered understanding of design. Founded in 1981 by Niels Bendtsen, the multifaceted design and manufacturing group produces products that are authentic and distinctively curious – design that feels at once organic and intelligent.

From a young age, Bendtsen was immersed within the design industry, having trained as an apprentice with his father to produce Scandinavian-inspired furniture. Emigrating from Denmark to Canada in the 1950s, Bendtsen opened his first store, Danet Interiors, in 1963. Going on to design both the Ribbon Chair – which permanently resides in MoMA – and the Lotus Sofa, Bendtsen became a fixed name within the furniture design industry. From there he founded Bensen, in pursuit of quality and sophistication with pieces that felt empowered and accessibly affordable.

Bensen values growth, simplicity and honest design solutions – ideals presented within every facet of the company and its products.

This intention led to Bensen Italia; founded in 2010, Bensen Italia is a collaboration between Bendtsen and Paolo Chiarot. The extensive Bensen line of furniture – once produced in Canada – is now solely manufactured in Italy and deeply rooted in traditional Italian craftsmanship. Bensen pieces project a refined and innate versatility, allowing each to elegantly adapt to their specific spaces.

Bensen recently welcomed its latest collection, Circa. Articulated through curved silhouettes and luxurious upholstery with the option of a metal or timber frame, Circa is available as a lounge chair, armchair and stool. The structure’s organic form both cradles and comforts.

Intrigued by new technologies in an ever-changing industry, Bensen designs pieces that feel timeless and are suitable for both residential and commercial settings.

The Pre Lounge Chair offers similar design values but is presented with integrated 360-degree rotating technology. Its crisp and charismatic presence offers a point of difference to traditional seating principles. Bensen also features the Endless Modular Lounge, a product encouraged to be distinctive to its space and purpose. Offering variety and an enriching versatility, Endless can be moulded from a selection of pieces, modules, seat depths and arm heights.

The Tokyo Armchair intertwines traditional Japanese and Danish design in a modern yet familiar expression, the ribbon shaped wood creating a flow of movement within the piece. In keeping with an akin timber mien, the Torii Chair and Stool are sharply defined by closely spaced back legs, a small arched backrest and a broad seat.

Delicately perched in a minimal fashion, the Torii Chair and Stool are resolved, durable and comfortable, celebrating traditional joinery design and innovative contemporary construction. Both the Torii Chair and Torii Stool are featured within the Ashurst Melbourne Office by Bates Smart and the Qantas Domestic Business Lounge in Brisbane and Melbourne Airports by Woods Bagot.
