Boulevard House
Brickworks GB Masonry brings warmth and texture to a family home by AMoA, showing that great design is as much about feeling as form.
On a quiet residential street in south-east Melbourne, Boulevard House by AMoA (Albert Mo Architects) stands as a study in grounded elegance – a home that tempers architectural form with fine-grain material detail. Anchored by the robust tactility of GB Masonry blocks from Brickworks, the house unfolds as a restrained yet expressive composition, confident in its restraint.
Designed for a young family with three children, the home navigates the dual challenge of density and domesticity. Located on a tight corner site, the brief required both spatial generosity and privacy, prompting a response that is sculptural in massing yet fluid in program. From the street, the home presents a deliberate solidity. But within, it opens to courtyards, voids and framed views, drawing light and calm deep into its core.
This sensitivity extends beyond structure into the lived experience of the home. Passive design principles have been embedded throughout, from carefully oriented openings that maximise solar gain to the thermal mass properties of the masonry, which work quietly to moderate temperature year-round. These strategies ensure the home remains as comfortable as it is refined, without resorting to excess. Landscaping, too, is approached with restraint, acting as a verdant counterpoint to the architectural weight.
The material language plays a defining role in this transition. Veneer in Porcelain provides a consistent textural base, one that imbues Boulevard House with a sense of permanence while subtly catching light throughout the day. Externally, the masonry forms a perimeter of protection and order.
Internally, it serves as a unifying element, grounding each space with a soft visual rhythm. The choice of product reflects a desire for timelessness, texture and durability – qualities that speak to both the architectural intent and the realities of family life.
Across two levels, AMoA has crafted moments of repose and retreat – from a contemplative stairwell wrapped in light to a sunken lounge room that invites pause. These are gestures that lean into experience, creating a spatial choreography that is as intuitive as it is enduring.
Boulevard House demonstrates the power of considered material application at every turn. In the hands of AMoA, the masonry block becomes more than a construction material – it becomes a quiet protagonist in the life of the home. Paired with a measured design approach, the result is a residence that feels at once solid and sensitive – confident in form and deeply attuned to the nuances of how we live.
