Going Carbon Neutral – Brickworks Building Products

Established in the 1930s, Brickworks has become one of the world’s largest manufacturers of building products. Recognising its substantial influence within the design and construction industry, the company has taken it upon itself to play a significant role in paving the way towards a more sustainable built environment.

Naturally durable, low-maintenance and recyclable, brick is a material with many inherent benefits. Informed by a longstanding knowledge of these qualities and driven by an acute awareness of the need for a more sustainable construction industry – both environmentally and socially – Brickworks has presented its sustainability strategy ‘Build for Living: Towards 2025’, outlining the ways that the company’s products will begin shaping industry standards.

Key to this strategy are the company’s carbon neutral commitments. Brickworks is the first to achieve two Climate Active Product Certifications – one for the Tasmanian Austral Bricks factory as the first manufacturing site in Australia to provide certified carbon neutral bricks; the other for an opt-in program for architects, commercial builders and developers, allowing them to purchase carbon neutral bricks and pavers sold from any Australian factory. These two offerings have allowed Brickworks to enable a substantial reduction in carbon footprints and the offsetting of any remaining emissions.

Sustainability remains the defining challenge of the building industry. It is a task that Brickworks is confronting head on, seeking to build a more sustainable future, brick by brick.
