Bryn Mawr by Melissa & Miller Interiors
Located in its namesake, Bryn Mawr, this home by international design practice Melissa & Miller Interiors is intimate and vibrant, deeply attuned to its owners and grounded in a profound appreciation for craftsmanship.
Spread across a single floor, the French Colonial home is nestled within a verdant garden. The interiors form a sophisticated series of spaces, rich in materiality and colour. “The homeowners were very open to using colour as a theme,” explains Melissa Urdang Bodie, co-founder of Melissa & Miller. “Not all clients are open to [this], but these clients, luckily, were.”
The primary living room features strong, elegant shapes, exemplified by the oversized sectional sofa upholstered in lapis lazuli linen by Schumacher. A mix of distinctive pieces crafted by local female designers include Cuff Studio’s rope-wrapped pendants and a pair of Sumo armchairs by Holly Hunt. A mustard yellow ottoman, also by Hunt, nods to the citrusy hues in the John McLean abstract on the adjacent wall. “We wanted the house to reflect the creativity in both husband and wife – polished, well-travelled, yet not flashy,” explains Urdang Bodie. A custom bookshelf, designed in collaboration with East Otis Studio, frames the space and harmonises the two sitting areas.
This thread of colour and texture extends into the kitchen, where handpainted wallpaper by de Gournay creates a whimsical, light-filled atmosphere, “very conducive to entertaining,” says Urdang Bodie. The bespoke cabinetry, finished in a mint hue, is beautifully complemented by handcrafted brass hardware from Hoffman Hardware. Surrounding the central island, stools by Thomas Hayes Studio provide a tactile counterpoint, fostering a sense of togetherness.
Beyond the central living space, the den is saturated in a rich navy blue, creating an intimate, contemplative atmosphere. “The clients spend a lot of time reading with their feet up, so the upholstered reading chairs needed to be both stylish and functional,” explains Urdang Bodie. A custom ottoman by Richard Herzog, upholstered in a Kelly Wearstler fabric, complements the silhouette of a low-lying sofa by Maiden Home.
Wools, silks and cottons blend with natural timbers to evoke an atmosphere of simplicity, comfort and softness in the bedrooms. In the primary suite, two oak Ojai nightstands by Lawson-Fenning frame a generous bed, upholstered in Italian boucle. A Phillip Jeffries grass cloth envelops the space, while a brass light fixture by Michael Amato for The Urban Electric Co presides overhead.
Bryn Mawr is a testament to Melissa & Miller Interior’s considered approach – layered, expressive and deeply attuned to its owners. The result is a masterful blend of bold colour, refined craftsmanship and a distinct sense of individuality.
