Carroll Gardens Townhouse by Starling Architecture
Two residences within a Brooklyn townhouse combine to create Carroll Gardens Townhouse, showcasing an interior palette of organic tones and textures that elevate and unify all five levels.
In a collaboration between Starling Architecture and Emily Lindberg Design, the townhouse was improved with practical additions, including a mudroom, work-from-home spaces and an expanded dining area capable of accommodating a family of five and guests. To fulfill the brief, the kitchen was relocated from the centre of the residence to the southern side of the building, where it benefits from morning light. The cellar, once a concrete storage space, was also transformed into a versatile playroom, designed to evolve with the children as they grow.
European white oak flooring, panels, slats and battens infuse each room with texture and warmth, complemented by bespoke timber cabinetry and shelving. Spanning five levels, a standout design feature is the timber stair screen, characterised by its vertical slatted lines that echo throughout the home. This motif extends to the mudroom walls on the garden level and serves as a textural backdrop in the dining area.
The dining zone is framed by timber panels on all sides, including the ceiling, creating a cosy enclosure that contrasts with the kitchen’s brighter ambience. A long bench and walnut table offer ample space for lively dinner parties. Located alongside the living room and foyer, the second floor now acts as a central hub for the family to gather and connect.
Subtle yet effective splashes of colours enhance the warm timber hues throughout the home. Pale grey-blues highlight soft furnishings, kitchen counters, splashbacks, upholstered bedheads and benches, while darker shades of the same colour add depth to tiled flooring in wet areas. Most walls are painted in a contrasting, blue-tinted white, except for the office space where cork-clad walls provide both practicality and insulation. In the playroom, a vibrant furniture palette introduces a lively atmosphere, with a magnetised wall for art displays.
Practical solutions for family life include ample shelving, hooks and storage nooks, all integrated into low-maintenance surfaces and flooring. With its organic tones extending throughout every space, the newly renovated townhouse resembles a timber lantern, enhanced by the inviting warmth of natural materials.
