As an homage to the grandeur of the original Victorian-era home, Casa Eterea combines a pared-back refinement with a light yet muted sensibility that softens transitions. Biasol focuses on quietening the surrounds to propose a home of stillness that fuses both its heritage past and a contemporary future, while opening to the natural elements as much as possible.

Like many of the heritage homes within inner Melbourne, Casa Eterea is formed by the legacy of its Victorian past shaping its present. Bringing a clarity across the site and opening the original building’s formalised planning, the new home allows for a more inclusive utilisation of the site and a more open and connecting sensibility. With an approach founded in refinement, Biasol overlays principles across the site that fold in a consistent palette. Through a more tonality, each space – new and old – is bound together and feels like a natural evolution of one another.

Gradually transitioning into the new, the long linear corridor connects the existing and the proposed, acting as a spine through the centre of the home.

With the original cottage frontage retained in place, key elements are restored to ensure the handmade detailing and crafted features remain for years to come, while the use of a singular colour enhances their presence. Gradually transitioning into the new, the long linear corridor connects the existing and the proposed, acting as a spine through the centre of the home. Enhancing flow and visible connections, glass doors are then used to offer a delineation and separation when needed, while still ensuring links remain. Glass has been inserted to connect beyond and within the home, yet still retains a similar approach as the original – framing specific views and offering a control of the incoming natural light.

Combining classical touches such as natural stone and brushed brass, the bathrooms and kitchen share a similar palette. By inserting enduring finishes amongst the contemporary and existing spaces, the narrative of the home continues, steeped in history interpreted through a more modern lens. The variations of a grey palette soften the feeling of being within the spaces and further enhance a sense of retreat from the surrounding streetscape. Ensuring the home is its own private sanctuary for the owners, once inside and moving through the various spaces, there is an undeniable transportive feeling present.

Retaining the original lofted feeling within, the history of Casa Eterea continues with purpose. Biasol transforms the home into the epitome of elegance and refinement, paving a clear path for its future.
