Framing Nature – Casa Roca by PPAA
Maximising the experience of nature from the inside out, PPAA proposes a humble form amid a picturesque landscape in Yosemite National Park, with a focus on framing nature and complementing the setting. Casa Roca is not just a home that that delivers sublime vistas but is a physical, architectural response to the surrounds.
Featuring extensive views of the national park, Casa Roca sits gently upon the earth as a single-level dwelling in an effort to blend in with the landscape. Either side of the form slides open to create an uninterrupted passageway through the home’s centre, allowing fresh air to flow swiftly throughout. The owners wanted to embrace the site and make the most of the opportunity to live amid such natural beauty. Not only does the family retreat feature welcoming gestures throughout, but PPAA elevates the design, dissolving indoor-outdoor thresholds, so the abode remains in constant dialogue with the natural surrounds.
The residence has been positioned carefully to allow natural light to enter seamlessly and flood the interior spaces, creating a warm and passive dwelling. With secluded wings on either side, the home is imbued with a sense of balance. These private areas of retreat offer opportunities for sanctuary within, while the central space is reserved for gathering and socialising, bringing the family together.
Similar to the way that being in nature seems to slow one’s tempo, the materiality and simplicity of Casa Roca also invites occupants to rest and recharge. By simplifying the form, ordinary moments experienced within the home are heightened. The residence is more of a place to observe and appreciate the beauty of the surrounds, with framed views and openings allowing for the landscape to appear as though it is a living painting that shifts throughout the day, in accordance with the seasons.
