Experiencing Italian Residential Design – Casa Sul Lago by Baxter
Established in 1990 in Lake Como, Italy, Baxter has become an established name in the global design firmament, all while remaining true to its identity as an Italian-made, family-owned company. Over the years, the company’s tradition of craftsmanship and mastery of leather have remained steadfast, reflecting in its innovative repertoire, high-quality materials and fastidious finishes, as seen in the new experience location at Casa Sul Lago, Lake Como.
Since its inception three decades ago, Baxter has remained at the vanguard of leather craftsmanship. Through collaborations with such noted designers as Paola Navone, Piero Lissoni, Frederico Peri, Roberto Lazzeroni and many more, its collections are diverse in form and function, but unified in that they are each carefully handcrafted to ensure the highest quality standards.
Baxter’s new outdoor line is inspired by the growing aspiration to furnish outdoor spaces with high-quality furniture. Designed and executed in-house, together with Baxter’s signature designers, the pieces — comprising tables, chairs, benches, sofas and more — are a result of several years of research. The upholstery is innovated to withstand outdoor elemental damage. Baxter’s cotton fibre alternative mirrors the feel of raw cotton and linen, while offering the robustness of ecological yarn. Similarly, its outdoor leathers are suited for all seasons.
Baxter’s newly opened location, Casa Sul Lago, is a twentieth-century villa at Lake Como and stands in for the traditional showroom experience, affording patrons a view of the brand’s collections in a relaxed residential setting. Among the outdoor collections on display is the Himba collection by Roberto Lazzeroni. Made from sandblasted natural iroko wood and weather-resistant oil finishes, the sculptural sofas, armchairs and tables are ideal additions to the garden, patio or poolside and are well-suited to even the colder months. Also on exhibition are Studiopepe’s Dharma and Narciso collections, which similarly blur the line between indoor and outdoor seating. With designs inspired by postmodern eclecticism, Dharma’s glossy, lacquered finishes are informed by the vibrant, bourgeois paintings of English artist David Hockney. Narciso is a counterpoint to Dharma, with soft, enveloping sofas and armchairs that stand apart from the surroundings as much as they coalesce into them.
Casa Sul Lago’s interior plays host to Baxter’s indoor collections. A Fany coffee table and a pair of Nuvola lamps anchor the entrance, while a Joni desk and bookcase, Barret armchairs, Tebe and Liquid coffee tables and a Lazybones Lounge in soft sheepskin elevate the living room. Other designs on display include a Himani rug, a Thalatha coffee table by Studiopepe, a Roberto Lazzeroni-designed Nairobi table and a Stone bed by Federico Peri.
Baxter cements itself as pioneer of craft, producing pieces that use leathers and materials in new and innovative ways. With the opening of Casa Sul Lago in Lake Como, the brand has evidenced a commitment to high-quality, extraordinary and dynamic design.
