Acclaimed lighting designer Christopher Boots presents THEIA, a range of quartz crystal lights inspired by ancient mythology that bring transcendent design to contemporary spaces.
Cutting-edge lighting designer Christopher Boots – founder of the eponymous Melbourne studio – has unveiled THEIA, three domed lights that draw their name from both the hypothesised ancient planet Theia and the Greek Titaness who shares its name. The crystal quartz pendant, sconce and oyster “bridge the celestial and mythological,” says Boots, to create luminous, sculptural pieces that embody clarity, light and insight.
Founded on the principle of Fiat Lux – let there be light – the studio has built its reputation for transcending the ordinary. Rather than simply illuminating spaces, Boots creates objects that define and transform architecture. His signature pieces, handcrafted by skilled artisans, emerge from an exploration of delicate quartz crystal and collaborative partnerships with celebrated glass-blowers, bronze foundries, sculptors and metalsmiths.
A core focus is the relationship between architecture, symbology and the geometry found in nature. Each of the studio’s pieces presents an interpretation of pattern, structure and symmetry while honouring traditional elements of form and scale. By marrying heritage craftsmanship with cutting-edge materials and techniques, Boots creates what he calls ‘future antiques’ – pieces designed to be celebrated across time.
“We pair aesthetics with practicality to create lighting sculptures with lasting impact,” he says. “Each piece is conceived as a collectible work of functional art that considers the true, long-term impact of design.”
The THEIA pendant symbolises this vision perfectly. Drawing inspiration from antique hand-blown glass chandeliers, the intricate light has been conceived as an heirloom piece built to endure. Its hemisphere shape, resembling an inverted umbrella, departs from traditional chandelier forms. Feathered with clear quartz crystals that lend a translucent quality, THEIA forms a striking silhouette.
The pendant’s transformative nature reveals itself over time. “By day, THEIA stands as a sculptural centrepiece, its textured surface interacting with natural light to create dynamic reflections,” says Boots. “At night, the piece transforms, casting a warm, ambient glow.”
Every detail of the THEIA pendant, oyster and sconce reflect careful craftsmanship. From each crystal being hand selected to the precise engineering hidden within, the pieces balance technical innovation with rugged beauty. The result is a celebration of light and art designed to bring dramatic impact to any space.
