CKR Residence by Studio Liu
A refuge of calm and lightness, CKR Residence by Studio Liu embodies a unified vision between the interior design studio and its client. With crisp whites, warm timbers, soft curves and functional forms, the family home embodies the refined elegance of European residences.
Drawing inspiration from the client’s desire for a peaceful abode, Studio Liu crafts a space of timeless design that prioritises longevity over fleeting trends. “We wanted the residence to embody our thoughtful and restrained approach to designing a home,” says Louise Liu, creative director at Studio Liu. Harnessing the artistry of James Turrell, Studio Liu has challenged the visual and spatial perception within the dwelling, reshaping both what is observed and how it is perceived. “We wanted to curate each space through subtle layers of form, materials and tones, arranged together to create layered vistas,” she says. Moreover, there was attention given to the seamless flow of the floor plan. “We wanted the spaces to unfold as you progressed through them, whether it was opening up to the sky through a skylight or through an unexpected change in materiality.”
Having a client who preferred a minimalist approach to decoration, Studio Liu were able to direct attention towards material quality and the selection of enduring, natural finishes. As such, marbles, plasters, timbers and metals were chosen for their durability. Additionally, each space was meticulously curated with layers of form, furniture and materials, complemented by a palette of subtle hues. The residence also showcases monolithic natural stone features like the kitchen bench and fireplace, alongside curved elements such as the staircase. “Every element, from integrated handles to bespoke lighting fixtures, bears the imprint of thoughtful craftmanship and deterring disposability,” says Louise.
The interior design of the home centres on the interplay between tonal and textural contrasts. “Our clients had a discerning eye for detail, so we worked together on a minimal array of finishes, reducing waste and reaffirming our commitment to mindful design,” says Louise. The palette encompasses an array of natural and robust finishes, including Venetian plaster, natural stones and veneered walls. Moreover, aged metal accents are strategically integrated to enhance depth and encourage a tactile exploration of luxury. Collaborating with clients who appreciated pushing the boundaries of minimalist design, Studio Liu reverted to timeless interior design principles such as optimising light, maximising airflow and prioritising functionality.
“Our clients had a discerning eye for detail, so we worked together on a minimal array of finishes, reducing waste and reaffirming our commitment to mindful design,” says Louise.
CKR Residence stands as a family abode characterised by lasting balance and substance. “We worked closely with our clients to ensure the spaces echoed their individual personalities, which is extremely important in a home,” says Louise. Furthermore, Studio Liu aimed for the dwelling to embody slow living and intentional construction. “Our vision was a harmonious blend of form and function that celebrates the beauty of intentionality.”
