Unexpected Encounter – Cliffhanger by Studio John Irving Architects
Cliffhanger emerges as an unwavering retreat for its owners, aligned along a cliff edge near Auckland. Studio John Irving Architects matches the enthusiasm of an engineer client with a proposition that anchors the form to the site – a structure that resembles more modernist principles than expected in a coastal locale.
Cliffhanger was led to fruition by its engineer client who also had a fascination with construction and craft. Used in structural supports, floating floors, a stair that magically ascends to reveal a secret room, colossal pivoting fins, an unyielding garage door, bathroom vanities, shelving, coffee tables and various pieces of custom furniture, steel is celebrated in every conceivable way within the home. Together with influences taken from the cliff face the home sits upon, an exposed and rugged exploration of material is evidenced in the construction of the home.
Studio John Irving Architects navigates the steep slope of the site by using the grounding nature of the formwork as a base from which stairs and other platforms cascade. A palette of bold confidence, including blackened precast concrete, waxed steel and a band-sawn cedar, lines the interior. The silhouette of the home feels almost classical yet balances contemporary engineering to ensure such a heavy form can exist on site.
A uniquely industrial charm is created through the combination of materials, yet the refinement with which they come together elevates the experience. The lofted positioning of the home ensures uninterrupted and enviable views out to the coast. Reflecting the sky, the black oxide tinted concrete floors inside also subtly engage with the landscape and natural light warms and illuminates spaces throughout the day.
