Once a classic Federation home, Clovelly Residence has been transformed into a sleek, stylish sanctuary with a new modern addition. Michiru Higginbotham and Lauren Forrester preserve the essence of the heritage dwelling whilst weaving in contemporary elements – a seamless integration of past and present that results in an inviting and refined abode.

Nestled near Sydney’s coast in Clovelly, the historic gem that is Clovelly Residence has been breathed with new life through a considered renovation and addition. Originally built in the 1880s, the heritage home at the front of the site retains much of its charm. Ensuring this sense of character carried over to the new addition was key to creating the ideal sanctuary for a growing family. Through a masterful design that also sees the attic space transformed into a dedicated primary suite, a new sequence between interior zones is established.

The newly defined addition to the rear is split into two levels, with the upper floor housing the sleeping zones and the lower level providing a communal living space. Although the existing elements of the home are reflective of their time, the reworking dissolves the boundaries between old and new, creating a seamless transition. Through a unifying palette of finishes and restored original flooring and detailing throughout, the contrast between traditional and contemporary is softened. This evokes a feeling of openness, emphasising the sense of scale within.

Tactility and tone play a vital role in softening interior spaces throughout, with the architect and decorator utilising texture to add richness to a neutral base palette. As a result, the interior strikes a thoughtful balance between active communal spaces and secluded areas for quiet reflection. The overall design nurtures a sense of disconnection and comfort, catering to the family’s varying needs of interaction and relaxation. Clear references to the shaker style can also be seen throughout the home, which tie both past and present together, contributing to a consistency felt across spaces as well as a soothing atmosphere. The curated design and build was key to the success of the residence and establishing a peaceful ambiance within.
