Restoring Originality – Collection Le Corbusier®, Pierre Jeanneret®, Charlotte Perriand® by Cassina

Words by Brett Winchester

Steeped in design history, Cassina is widely recognised for reissuing some of the greatest design icons. Now, as part of the company’s commitment to authenticity, it has restored the original French names, Collection Le Corbusier®, Pierre Jeanneret® and Charlotte Perriand®.

In 1964, Cassina acquired the worldwide rights to serially produce the first four pieces designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Decades later – and coinciding with the imminent 50th anniversary of the Cassina iMaestri Collection – Cassina continues its reiussing of the iconic designs with a restored sense of validity. This also comes following the renewal of the collaboration with the Fondation Le Corbusier, Pernette Perriand-Barsac and the heirs of Pierre Jeanneret in producing these pieces of design history.

The product names now include the model number, the French name and other details regarding the collections’ adaptations and integrations, accurately paying homage to the work of the three architects and providing an exhaustive presentation of each piece.

With a focus on authenticity, the return of the collections’ original French names showcases Cassina’s commitment to researching and collaborating with the brands’ custodians. The product names now include the model number, French name and other details regarding the collections’ adaptations and integrations, accurately paying homage to the work of the three architects and providing an exhaustive presentation of each piece. For example, the Fauteuil Grand Confort sofa becomes “2 Fauteuil Grand Confort, petit modèle, deux places sofa by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, adaptation de Charlotte Perriand pour Cassina en 1978.”

As the only company authorised to produce the designs of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, Cassina works closely with the foundation and heirs under the guidance of specialised experts in design history. It is through these methods that Cassina continues to balance the past and present of design, bringing the heart of each collection into today. In addition, as a testament to Cassina’s commitment to protect design and promote authenticity, the company marks its models with a progressive production number – a tool that recognises the artistic value and controls authenticity. Also accompanying each acquired piece is an identity card that cites the number together with the product’s new name, history and description.

By restoring the original French names of these 20th century products, Cassina is playing an important role in the continued celebration of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand.
