Courtyard House by Stanic Harding
Situated on a corner site in Sydney’s Double Bay, Courtyard House by Stanic Harding is reimagined through an innovative courtyard design, creating a calm oasis for a young family.
Given the home’s compact site, the brief called for both connectivity and flow while allowing for separation when needed. With the dwelling designed to unfold as one moves through the residence, a central courtyard captures the north-western light and links the living areas, blurring the threshold between indoor and outdoor spaces. The upper level offers more privacy, with an operable brise soleil that provides solar control and privacy while adding depth and texture to the facade.

The textural facade of the courtyard extends to the home’s outer shell, defined by a robust, restrained finish and vertical louvres with perforated metal. Complemented by mature palms and a leafy garden, these elements inject drama into the streetscape while harmonising with the adjoining townhouses. Similarly, the main entry is located on the corner of the site and is integrated into the garden, which has been donated back to the street.
Inside, Interni has created a seamless flow between the home, landscaped garden and pool. A centrally located entry and stair clearly distinguish the ground floor, the parents’ suite and the children’s domain on the first floor, while a roof terrace offers respite. Natural light and soft curves further connect the spaces. Each room is thoughtfully tailored for its purpose: the main bedroom serves as a luxurious retreat with velvet and cashmere, while children’s bedrooms reflect their individual personalities.
“This project was a close collaboration between architect, client and designer. Our involvement from the initial planning stages provided an opportunity to shape the flow and functionality of the house, which we loved,” says Louise Bell, director at Interni. “The result is a highly resolved, carefully articulated home befitting the needs of a young, evolving family.”
Courtyard House is a thoughtful response to its site and neighbouring buildings, presenting as an understated yet striking home. Grounded in the idea of harmony, it balances openness with retreat, textured and restrained finishes, as well as soft curves with dramatic details.
