A striking example of architectural ingenuity and collaboration, Crown Road by Jane Cameron Architects and Architect Hewson is a respectful revival of a classic mid-century home.

A seminal project by architects Guilford Bell and Neil Clerehan, Crown Road’s inception was one of the first examples of multi-generational, architect-designed homes. Clothed in subdued tones and blending subtly into the landscape, the unassuming dwelling follows the slope of the site and utilises a courtyard within the built form.

A hallmark of the original design era, a limited material palette still features and predominantly consists of dark timber, concrete block and glass, paying homage to mid-century design principles while subtly hinting at modern interventions within.

Now, entrusted to a young family, Crown Road underwent a thoughtful metamorphosis. The objective for the renovations was clear, to judiciously integrate modern functionality while preserving the inherent charm of its origins. The approach is not merely about adding modern elements, it’s about a delicate interplay that weaves together the threads of modernity and mid-century elegance into the very fabric of the design narrative.

The solution to combining adjacent residences centered around ‘the hatch,’ a small timber-lined cupboard that originally housed two telephones. This pivotal location became the axis for the transformation of internal spaces and was reconfigured to enhance access to natural light and encourage courtyard views. A new terracotta-tiled entry wrapped in limed oak was introduced, seamlessly connecting to new living spaces, a guest area, a study and the reapportioned ground floor. While many aspects of the original interior were updated, certain features, including mosaic-tiled bathrooms, were preserved for future consideration. In the heart of the home, an expansive kitchen and dining area serves as a focal point for family gatherings. Here, simple white joinery with vintage-inspired fixtures mingles with existing features cohesively bridges eras, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The thoughtful restoration of the original facade retains integrity, establishing a dialogue between past and present and introducing subtle modern elements to enhance livability.

Externally, the palette commands attention. Crown Road exemplifies the art of thoughtful design, becoming a home that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing while remaining true to its origins. Jane Cameron Architects and Architect Hewson have successfully woven modern living into the fabric of a mid-century beauty, reflecting the enduring appeal of the bygone era’s design in a contemporary world.
