A renovated one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Surry Hills, Crown Street Apartment by Designed By JAM is filled with natural light and calming hues.

As design enthusiasts, the owners had a clear vision in mind for the rejuvenation of their space. Responding to the clients’ desire for a home that communicated an atmosphere akin to a cool rooftop bar, Designed By JAM seamlessly married indoor and outdoor spaces, welcoming a wealth of natural light. Furthermore, inspired by the apartment’s surrounds, the team created a space that directly responds to young couple’s need for a modern dwelling that could accommodate both relaxation and fun.

Integrating the kitchen, living and dining area into the one space, Designed By JAM resolved the home’s spatial issues by incorporating banquette seating and a television console into the kitchen island bench. Moreover, as the clients enjoy cooking for friends, supplying room for hosting but retaining a full-sized kitchen was imperative.

For the colour palette of the apartment, the team looked to the foliage seen through the kitchen and living space windows, which inspired the use of an almost translucent Esmerelda green stone island bench top. To further complement this hero feature, pink joinery – which turns an almost white under sunlight – was used to soften and uplift the stone. To bring additional warmth into the open plan space, timber accents are employed and a sheer curtain filters direct light.

In the bedroom, the old, mirrored sliding wardrobe doors were replaced with functional custom-made joinery that allows the owners to utilise every inch of the private space. And, as the couple often works from home together, it was imperative to create two separate areas to work from. One such space is the small desk area that has been incorporated into the bedroom. Through the use of cool tones and an emphasis on open-plan living that extends to the outside balcony, Crown Street Apartment is the perfect residence for occupants who love nights in and hosting dinner parties.
