An Enduring Presence – Dalkeith Residence by MAEK
Formed as a stack of assorted volumes that optimise views outward, Dalkeith Residence spans the full width of its site and possesses an openness within. MAEK carefully crafts the home as an enduring architectural exploration of linear planes and focuses on using a muted and cohesive palette throughout.
Marking a clear position among the streetscape, a striking sense of elevated legacy and luxury underpins Dalkeith Residence. Located in its namesake suburb, the multi-level home adopts a pared back approach to create a sense of calm throughout. Reinforced by using limited materials, the stucture frames the views beyond and is oriented to capture solar gains and natural light. Clearly marking each of its levels through alternate finishes, the lower level sits lighter and distinct from the upper floors. MAEK arranges the overall massing of the residence as a series of boxed forms that clearly articulate the interior planning and form an individualistic exterior.
Conceived through a holistic lens, the contemporary and linear form sits within a curated landscape design that buffers the harder edges of the built form. Overlooking a full-sized tennis court below, the three levels of the home sit contained within a solid masonry outer wall that both directs views to the greenery and reinforces a sense of privacy. Across the interior and exterior, flowing curves and dramatic lines usher movement between the indoor and outdoor zones.
Contrasting elements overlay a boldness between spaces and draw focus to geometric pieces within the home. The kitchen’s darkened elements create a resolve that deviates from more traditional and lighter designs. Instead of aiming to create an increased sense of scale, the approach embeds an element of drama and theatrics into the otherwise muted house. Marked by its oversized four-metre-long island bench, the kitchen exemplifies the linear nature of the home’s design.
