Contextual Balance – Darebin House by Molecule Studio
Responding to the native colours and patterns of the Darebin Parklands located opposite, Darebin House by Molecule Studio is a sanctuary composed of natural elements, engaging with the dialogue of nature in an urban context. The botanical ambience of the parklands extends across the street to the residence, reflected in the architectural elements of the gently resolute two-storey home, which stands apart from urban gestures of its locale.
The clients brought specific ideas when envisioning Darebin House. They were after a family residence that conversed with the parklands opposite, a home evolving from a compact footprint to favour a maximised garden space. A striking façade draped in zinc shingles rises as an immediate cue to a rigorous design approach, which continues inside the residence, hinting at a fastidious visual resolve and a meticulous overlapping of interior planning. Natural light was key, as was sustainability and self-containment, simultaneously accommodating guests whilst ensuring longevity for the occupants to grow in place. The residents sought a high-performing house that seamlessly complemented their daily routine – precise and in alignment with the rational design approach that is evident throughout the dwelling. It is an abode that leverages the qualities of the natural surrounds through a tempered and edited built environment.
Darebin House has unfolded from three cornerstone project details: its restrained visual treatment, which exudes a level of clarity and austerity through volume and geometry; a prioritising of sustainability; and the home’s capacity to remain grounded in place. These pillars have driven the realisation of a residence that is modest yet far from simplistic, with myriad details that become more and more conspicuous as it is explored. The architect has allowed for a reductive palette that is enhanced by curves and apertures – the staircase and oculus window for example – which distorts natural light so that it becomes an atmospheric layer.
The residence exudes qualities of light and space, ensuring the design details feel perfectly intentional and cleanly purposeful.
The experience of the residence is one of volumetric compression and expansion. An intentionally moody entryway clings to its spatial constraints to foster a sense of decompression as one crosses the threshold, emphasising the transition from a sun-saturated front garden to the interior. Drawn further inside, below timber coffered ceilings that support a catwalk above, the space liberally expands into a light-drenched, double-height, open plan living area.
The residence exudes qualities of light and space, ensuring the design details feel perfectly intentional and cleanly purposeful. For example, bathrooms are identical, as is the style of the study desks. Touchpoints such as timber shelving, window frames and recessed bench seats become fixed centrepieces – precise linear compositions that complement the aesthetic of custom furniture, lighting, artwork and the industrious, sleek, steel kitchen.
Instead of dissolving boundaries between inside and out, Darebin House has been shaped by a deliberate strengthening of its thresholds.
Instead of dissolving boundaries between inside and out, Darebin House has been shaped by a deliberate strengthening of its thresholds. The rear garden is a visible component of the living space behind fixed glazing. The catwalk upstairs extends out beyond the periphery of the dwelling whilst a substantial pivot door restores any sense of overexposure. The outdoors inform the design and vice versa whilst each is compartmentalised through clear, physical boundaries.
A distinct reminder of place, Darebin House is a home that finds value in a connection between pure geometry and nature to establish contextual, stylistic and sustainable balance. From the outset, this residence acknowledges its broader landscape and openly engages with it to become a natural sanctuary for its occupants.
