Des Rapides Residence by Appareil Architecture
Perched above a bend in the Diable River, Des Rapides Residence offers views of a simple access path on one side and the majestic Laurentian Mountains on the other. Designed by Appareil Architecture, the house harmonises with its surroundings, embracing the contrast of these vistas.
Mirroring the slope of the riverbank, the angled roof defines the striking silhouette of Des Rapides Residence. From the street, the house appears modest and unassuming, its roof pitched towards the access path. In contrast, the rear of the home is boldly open, with the upward tilt of the roof embracing expansive views of the outdoors.
“We wanted to give the roof a sense of lightness, almost floating above the house,” says Marc-Olivier Champagne-Thomas, associate architect at Appareil Architecture. “We deliberately avoided the use of lateral columns for its support, opting instead for an integrated approach where the body of the structure and that of the roof are harmoniously linked together, fitting like pieces of furniture.” In certain areas, the roof overhangs by up to 2.5 metres, creating serene galleries throughout the home.
“We wanted to work with buildings in the same way we work with furniture,” says Kim Pariseau, founding architect of Appareil Architecture. “We were inspired by our Piloti bench, characterised by its exposed joints and absence of hardware.” Clad in timber, Des Rapides Residence is an expressive structure, effortlessly distinguishing itself from regional chalets. “Beyond covering the surfaces with wood, we wanted to work with this noble material in all its diversity, using its structural properties for the framework, playing with its nuances to create a unique exterior language and diffusing its warmth over every nook and cranny of the house,” says Champagne-Thomas.
Thoughtfully designed, Des Rapides Residence is crafted to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. Its south-facing orientation, coupled with an overhanging roof, maximises thermal efficiency. During winter, the home captures optimal sunlight, while in summer, ventilation beneath the roof prevents heat buildup. Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) foundations also allow insulation levels to exceed code requirements, and the advanced drainage system, compatible with the natural water cycle, minimises environmental impact.
“Des Rapides Residence creates a coherent, visible language at the crossroads between object and architecture,” says Pariseau. The architectural language gracefully integrates the home with its natural surroundings.
