Dogwood Southern Table and Bar by Square Feet Studio
Dogwood Southern Table and Bar at The Westin Charlotte, in North Carolina, presents a sophisticated dining experience rooted in Southern hospitality.
Designed by Square Feet Studio, the restaurant and bar reinterprets classic Southern design with a fresh perspective, creating a space that feels both nostalgic and modern. Drawing inspiration from North Carolina’s state flower, the Dogwood tree, the design emphasises the delicate beauty and seasonal bloom of its blossoms. “The softness, femininity and dappled light filtering through the canopies were a constant influence on our design approach,” says Emily Mastropiero, partner and architect at Square Feet Studio. This is reflected in the custom lighting, antique mirrors and polka-dot sheer curtains by Valley Forge Fabrics that create a dynamic play of light and shadow.
Square Feet Studio conceived the space through the lens of traditional Southern homes, evoking the charm of intimate dinner parties. The material palette layers rich textures and traditional detailing. White oak herringbone flooring adds warmth, while deep green tones on the walls shift subtly throughout the day as natural light filters through. Botanical elements, like hand-painted floral wallpaper by Kelly Ventura, emphasise the natural influence woven throughout the design. Visitors in the lobby also glimpse the restaurant through an integrated planter, a nod to the idea of wandering through a private garden. “We layered textures and patterns within our finish palette that featured flora and fauna,” says Mastropiero.
The curved bar serves as a welcoming focal point, offering additional seating without overwhelming the room. Anchored by two existing columns, the back bar features walnut shelving with antique metal mesh detailing. The design team embraced contrast by mixing walnut and white oak tones, with the bar top showcasing rich Calacatta Viola stone with deep plum-coloured veining and a walnut edge. Custom oxblood-toned leather and brass bar stools provide comfort while maintaining a sleek profile. Just beyond, a lounge area adjacent to the bar provides an intimate setting for drinks or small plates, subtly separated from the main dining area to create distinct yet connected spaces.
Custom furniture is used throughout, including locally crafted banquettes, dining seating as well as a lounge by Jamie Stern and end-grain stained oak tables by LacquerCraft. Banquettes feature diamond tufting and turned feet, recalling classic furnishings from designers like Neel Reid and Philip Trammell Shutze. Art also plays a significant role, with works by Marlise Newman and Caitlin Perkins grounding the space in its local context. With its rich layers of tradition and modernity, Dogwood Southern Table and Bar brings to life an immersive experience that captures the essence of Southern hospitality with a refined and contemporary twist.
