As the latest renovation and modernisation of an original terrace home, Double Bay leverages its previous iteration as inspiration for its coming chapter. Georgina Wilson Associates overlays a new sense of purpose and relevance to the generous home, allowing a personal expression of its owners and a shared openness throughout.

Idyllically located in Sydney, Double Bay sees the transformation of an existing heritage, multi-level terrace home, ensuring internal and external connections embedded both vertically and horizontally. Having previously been renovated significantly some twenty years ago, the new works act as an extension of those efforts, continuing the contemporary layering of materiality and a grounding to place. Reworking core areas such as the kitchen, bathrooms and flooring, Georgina Wilson Associates ensures the latest revision embraces the outdoor lived life synonymous to Sydney, proposing a dedicated new garden space, outdoor dining and entertaining spaces as well.

New timber flooring runs throughout, setting the tone for the introduced furniture and other custom joinery integrated within various rooms.

Carefully crafted from within, Double Bay was built by Beebo Construction, together with joinery by Debrich Custom Joinery, seeing considered effort given to each of its inserted elements. By using both the original heritage detailing and ornate nature of the home as inspiration, the more recent reworking of the home also provided the framework to propose the new. Replacing the existing kitchen, the new marble and timber forms sit predominately within the shared living, dining and preparation zones, as both a place to convene and its own destination within the home.

Binding the old and new is a refreshing take on the materials and palette, overlaying a contemporary vitality and a lightening of what was previously existing. The prominence of the natural and textural material also acts to express an environmental connection, where openings allow increased ventilation and for a visual reminder of the surrounds and new outdoor areas. Coming together with a light and calming approach, the home represents a reset for its current owners to express themselves through their own imprint.

Through an emphasis of openness, Double Bay connects to both its past and its location with ease. Georgina Wilson Associates ensures a continuation of the home’s significance, whilst also allowing for passive comfort and a sense of retreat to bind its spaces.
