Poet Sofa
The undulating Poet sofa – which references both 1970s sensuality and ’80s decadence – is the first collaboration between ELLISON STUDIOS and Night Palm.
Retro Californian chic meets laid-back Australian aesthetics in the Poet sofa, a collaboration between Sydney’s ELLISON STUDIOS and Los Angeles-based Night Palm. The collaboration reflects the friendship – and shared design sensibilities – of ELLISON STUDIOS founder and CEO Leigh McKeown and Night Palm’s Tiffany Howell, who met in LA several years ago and “struck up an instant friendship”, according to Howell.
The Poet represents the confluence of two of Howell’s favourite decades, the 1970s and 1980s, its undulating form evoking the sensuality of the former and the decadence of the latter. Those eras also feature prominently in the work of ELLISON STUDIOS, reinforcing the design synchronicity of the practices. “The iconic aesthetics of those two decades have permeated both of our previous work,” says Howell. “The shape was inspired by my vintage references and then modernised through Leigh’s lens for living.”
For Howell, whose LA practice has worked with such A-list clients as Alicia Keys, Doechii and Rian Johnson, a sofa is a significant aspect of personal storytelling. “It’s often the location of a first kiss; it’s a place to daydream or watch old movies with family. And the Poet is as big figuratively as it is emotionally, framing the intersection of sensual form with rich sentiment.”
“The undulating shape was inspired by my vintage references and then modernised through Leigh’s lens for living.”
Poet – which is available exclusively in North America through Design Within Reach as well as through ELLISON STUDIOS in Australia – evokes the Californian landscape through a colour palette that includes Malibu Dune, a sandy-toned tufted velvet, Malibu Willow, also a tufted velvet in a muted green, and Airlie Camel, a soft bouclé weave.
