A revival of a classic Spanish mission-style bungalow, Elwood Residence expands on its generous internal proportions to better engage with natural light. Lucy Bowen Design and Lisa Buxton Interiors combine to craft a modern reshaping of the home and overlay a contemporary relevance.

Originally built in the 1930s, the residence called for a reworking to bring it into the contemporary context. Home to a family, creating a robust base was integral to how each of the spaces supported one another and ensuring the home’s original charm remained was vital when integrating the new elements. At just under 800 square metres, the home retains the essence of the original floorplan yet accommodates for socialising and entertaining guests. With architecture by Lucy Bowen Design and interior design by Lisa Buxton Interiors, the existing home is opened through a curated addition that ensures a meaningful engagement with the surrounding natural elements and the home’s history.

The home is brightened through increased access to light, space and a refreshed interior colour story. The select palette of materials and finishes adds a softness, whilst a playful geometric approach creates a striking transition between the anchored masonry elements of the original home and the new additions. Together with the richness of the textural timber elements throughout, the overall feel is both light yet tied to a natural influence.

Drawing from the original Spanish architectural stylings of the home, a generosity of scale is maintained. The addition extends outward and upward, tucking in additional bedrooms on the floor above and ensuring views of the streetscape remain uninterrupted. Adding an additional bathroom, two additional powder rooms and dedicated living areas for children and adults, the home is readied for its next chapter.

Elwood Residence embraces the structured nature of its origins in its contemporary reimagination. Lucy Bowen Design and Lisa Buxton Interiors ensure a respectful integration of the new amongst the old with increased connections to the landscape and the retention of the home’s original essence.
