There is little that can beat the visual warmth and natural materiality of timber underfoot. However, many hardwood floors use slow-growing timbers, which is inherently unsustainable. To combat this and increase the eco credentials of its products, WOODCUT uses a three-layer construction that is topped with the slower growing timber and backed with fast-growing poplar.

As only the outer wear-layer is seen by the user, limiting the use of oak, ash and walnut to this top surface is an effective means of reducing the amount of these timbers needed. Underneath this strong-wear layer, the boards use two layers of poplar, adhered using low-VOC adhesive, which also acts as a moisture and acoustic barrier.

WOODCUT’s three-layer production method is then strengthened by a pre-finishing process, during which the boards are prepared with hard-wearing UV Coatings.

WOODCUT’s three-layer production method is then strengthened by a pre-finishing process, during which the boards are prepared with hard-wearing UV Coatings. All coatings by WOODCUT are designed to be cured by a UV light, which crystallises the oil or lacquer and forms extra protection on the boards. The durability is further increased by the sawn-cut method used to trim the veneer. As opposed to a sliced cut, which uses boiling water to soften the wood, the sawn-cut method does not degrade the veneer, leaving it strong, even after many years of use.

Of course, a long-wearing timber product is inherently a sustainable one, but the sustainability of WOODCUT flooring extends beyond this to the manufacturing process, which carefully minimises wastage. Large off-cuts are used to make plywood, whilst the medium-sized off-cuts are fed into the burners that fuel the factory, and the small chips become mushroom compost.

An ever-expanding product range means WOOD-CUT is able to deliver a wide selection of design styles, from a minimalist and contemporary look to a rustic, homey farmhouse style. Currently, the range includes European oak and French oak, along with European ash and American walnut, which can be difficult to source in an engineered format in Australia.
