At Field House, CJH Studio honours the character of the traditional home while allowing it to evolve gracefully alongside its owners.
Balancing the home’s traditional bones with the client’s love of contemporary art and design, CJH Studio has shaped Field House into a bespoke residence with interiors that feel both intimate and timeless.
Entrusted with a clear creative brief and the freedom to lead the design vision, CJH Studio crafted spaces that respect the character of the home while allowing it to evolve alongside its owners. Practice director Cassie James-Herrick describes the project as an expression of the studio’s philosophy: a careful balance of function, deliberate materiality, evocative aesthetics and distinct personality. “The goal is always to create homes that feel lived-in and personal, responsive to the client’s lifestyle and brief, yet also timeless and beautifully composed,” she says. “Spaces that work as well in daily life as they do aesthetically.”
At Field House, entertaining was central to the brief. A restored vintage Willy Rizzo bar therefore became a defining feature of the interior. The first piece sourced with the client, it was meticulously restored throughout the build process and positioned at the entry, where it sets the tone for the rest of the residence. “More than a statement piece, the vintage bar establishes the social heart of the home, signalling that gathering, connection and a sense of playfulness are integral to daily life.”
The home delivers a sumptuous tactile experience, defined by the interplay of contrasting materials and finishes such as stained oak paired with chrome and brass accents. This juxtaposition of natural and metallic elements brings depth and idiosyncrasy to each space. The kitchen follows a similarly nuanced approach, with a custom wall colour developed to harmonise with the timber and stone, creating an atmosphere that is bright yet enveloping.
Beyond aesthetics, however, the kitchen is also where CJH Studio’s design rigour is most evident. “It’s not only where a significant portion of the budget is often invested but also where the most time is spent during the design and documentation process,” Cassie shares. “We focus heavily on understanding how the space is planned, built and used, from ergonomics and workflow to storage, usability and the appropriateness of materials and detailing. Because it’s such a hard-working space, every decision needs to support longevity and ease of use.” Ultimately, beneath the layering and elegant detailing, the home offers a sense of calm while encouraging enjoyment and engagement. Field House looks and feels luxurious because its bespoke design responds intuitively to the needs and preferences of those who call it home.
