Binding to Place – Fields of Gold by Meredith Clark
Through the instilling of a deliberate connection between inside and out, Fields of Gold completes the final chapter of its narrative. Meredith Clark integrates an interior approach that transforms the once disconnected and inwardly focused home into one that embraces the natural elements through framed vistas and an abundance of natural light.
The original home had been in need of an overhaul, and key architectural reworkings had already taken place prior to the design of the interiors, leaving scope for a finer tuning to ensure an expression of the owner and a deeper sense of connection to the verdant site and coastal surrounds. Meredith Clark combines a layered interior approach together with the careful orchestration of landscaping by Adam Robinson Design to emphasise the natural environment and bring a personal sensibility into each of the internal spaces.
Though the home did not require any changes to improve its functionality, it did need a personal touch to bring it into relevance for its inhabitants. The overarching mission was to imbue the interiors with their own personality and elevated feel, which was achieved through the deliberate and measured selection of natural and organic materials, each in various muted and neutral tones that add to the overall feeling of calm. As a result, and reflecting the locale’s valued outdoor lifestyle, the interiors introduce natural light with an elevated combination of finishes, furniture, lighting and fixtures, which heighten the engagement and sense of character within the home.
Furthermore, by realigning the planning, differing spaces are created that respond to the various functional requirements of the home, providing opportunities to come together and convene along with other spaces designed for retreat. In a funnelling of movement through the spaces and the plan, a softening gesture is introduced, with curves and arched openings that add a subtle playfulness to the home. The warmth of the timber within the select pieces and the integrated joinery brings a familiar feel to the gathering spaces, while also emphasising the natural connection.
