Forest Retreat by Scalar Architecture
Imagined as an immersive sanctuary for the owners – a place of refuge and contemplation – Forest Retreat embraces its surroundings. Scalar Architecture ensures a sustainable and airy design that sits sensitively within the landscape, blending natural elements with compact and thoughtful liveability.
Clad in dark green metal sheeting, Forest Retreat emerges as a subdued and conscientious dwelling, characterised by its condensed yet functional design. Nestled amid the forest surrounds of Litchfield, Connecticut, the residence offers occupants the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in nature while enjoying the modern comforts of home. Designed for a creative family of producers and writers, Forest Retreat serves as both a haven for relaxation and a wellspring of inspiration. Scalar Architecture positions windows and openings to capture the essence of the environment, evoking a sense of calm throughout the internal space.
The proposal prioritises a reduced ecological footprint. By embracing the natural beauty of its surroundings, the sloped forest clearing becomes the perfect perch for the home, accessible only by foot or a light vehicle to minimise disruption. Preserving as much of the landscape was important, as it guides every gesture introduced on the site. Ascending the timber steps, which double as seating for the outdoor area, one can immediately senses the spaciousness of the interior. Large, strategically positioned windows also frame views of the tree canopy, inviting sunlight to filter inward throughout the day.
At the heart of the design lies a central courtyard that serves as a focal point. This open space not only brings light and air inside but provides a secluded retreat protected from the elements. The courtyard’s creation involved lowering the roofline to form openings. Enclosed on all sides yet open to the sky above, this area offers a tranquil and intimate sanctuary. The home’s orientation and adjustable facade allow for climate control throughout the year, catering to the preferences of its owners. Boasting two bedrooms, a loft, a south-east porch and a tiered living, dining and kitchen area that utilises the slope of the terrain, the residence perfectly meets the owners’ needs.

Scalar Architecture redefines the classic cabin in the woods typology by integrating passive living principles and lightweight construction techniques. By considering and responding to the natural elements, the architect crafts a timeless dwelling.
