Design atelier Form(LA), founded by Brisbane native Jordan Mosslar, has opened its flagship showroom in Los Angeles. Located within a converted warehouse along North La Brea Avenue, the 450-square-metre space pays reverence to natural stone.

Mosslar, who founded Form(LA) in 2021 with the intention of bringing ease and efficiency to the design and procurement of bespoke stone furniture and objects, selected the 1940s building for its bones and location. “There aren’t many buildings like this and most of them are Downtown,” he says. “I love the fact that we’re in Hollywood and within walking distance to so many other galleries and showrooms.”

“I always just wanted to go to the stone yards and pick the stone, so this was really an outlet to do my first full interior project and experiment with materials, finishes and details.”

A complete renovation was required, but Mosslar – a trained architect with several years of experience working on residential interiors with Los Angeles design-build firm, Walker Workshop – was up for the challenge. “I always just wanted to go to the stone yards and pick the stone, so this was really an outlet to do my first full interior project and experiment with materials, finishes and details.”

The once-cavernous space, which has been carved into loosely defined rooms, is now galleryesque and supremely inviting. “People have compared it to a Milanese gallery, which is kind of what I wanted to achieve,” says Mosslar. A hefty pivot door made from a single slab of Calacatta Viola marble is a fitting entry and, further in, mosaic floor tiles spell out the atelier’s name in block letters.

Throughout, Form(LA)’s growing stable of customisable dining and coffee tables, seating and pedestals is thoughtfully arranged in clusters.

The atelier also plans to expand its offering to include Form(Finishes), a range of Mosslar-designed mosaics, fireplaces, bathroom vanities and cabinetry that can be customised for any project. It’s a natural evolution and the showroom will house it all. Also in the works is a dedicated meeting room where designers can host their clients while visiting the showroom, further closing the gap in the notoriously difficult design and specification process.

Natural stone is unsurprisingly pervasive; it clads deep reveals and stretches out underfoot, but as a warm and visually interesting material, it works. A handful of elements, like textured paint, glass scones, original timber rafters and greenery helps to bring diversity to the stone-forward palette, while an amber glow seems to drape across the residential-leaning rooms.

Mosslar gravitates towards neutral tones, citing a love of Travertine Argento – a sandy-coloured stone with notes of grey and white – as a favourite, but it’s the deep magentas and rose hues of Rosso Levanto and Calacatta Viola that have come to define the atelier’s distinct style. Asking Mosslar to choose one, however, would be a stretch; he loves them all and this showroom exists as an ode to that.
