Though Gaggenau is well and truly a global brand, the Sydney flagship showroom is firmly rooted in the local neighbourhood – in this case, the leafy streets of Surry Hills on Gadigal land.

The revitalised heritage building serves as an invitation to experience Gaggenau’s luxury home appliances and aims to present these everyday essentials in a way that resonates with a community of gourmet cooks, designers, architects and aesthetes alike.

Created by German architectural studio 1zu33, the showroom does more than just align with the locals – it also acts as a manifestation of Gaggenau’s brand identity in creating a sense of place. This is predominantly established through a conceptual approach to layout. Within the 260-square-metre former post office space, the showroom is divided into three key areas: The Social Hub, The Home of Gaggenau and The Difference.

Marked by lineal textured wall tiles and blackened steel-clad joinery where the Gaggenau range is on show, The Social Hub is designed for hosting events. Rich charcoals, earthy browns and ashy greys set the tone in this zone. The Home of Gaggenau, while no less sure of itself, is a softer, brighter area. It is set back further in the building and opens onto an inner courtyard, a feature rarely found in a Surry Hills showroom. It’s a sun-drenched, airy space but also entirely functional. A complete chef’s kitchen has been created, complemented with oak floorboards, walnut cabinetry, limewash ceilings and vast stone benchtops. This space has a welcoming feel to it, as though it might be a keen entertainer’s inviting and elegant kitchen.

The Difference is an immersive area that connects the Hub with the Home. Here, the story of Gaggenau is told quite directly. Iron ore, cobalt and silicon – materials integral to the brand’s development and evolution – are on display. Tucked behind a spy mirror, a small screen plays a video that details Gaggenau’s history and design processes.

There are multiple moods throughout Gaggenau Sydney; distinctive, familiar and innovative, which all work together to impress the brand’s identity and focus upon everyone who passes through.
