Georgetown Stables
Located on the edge of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park in Sydney’s far north, Georgetown Stables by Cadence & Co is a purpose-built equine sanctuary that balances refined craftsmanship with rugged materiality.
Designed and built by Cadence & Co, the stables are intended to serve as a home away from home for a horse-loving family, with both form and function given equal consideration.
Georgetown Stables is surrounded by sprawling paddocks and day yards, where horses roam freely and can approach the human occupants almost at the doorstep. The stables themselves are inviting yet durable, crafted from raw natural timber, corrugated iron and brick. However, these materials are far from austere, warmed as they are by a textural, rich palette that adds rustic charm and character.
In the stables and the adjacent lounge and tack room, subtle Aztec motifs are woven into the design, appearing in brickwork, interiors and the barn doors. Symmetry is a quiet thread that runs throughout, most notably in the patterned brick flooring, which cleverly echoes the precise rhythm of equestrian movements. This nuanced layering of references doesn’t shout but hums beneath the surface.
Every detail has been meticulously planned, not just in terms of functionality but also in relation to the connection between horse and rider. The layout is both considered and intuitive, accommodating the practicalities of an equine-focused lifestyle without compromising on aesthetics.
The lounge and tack room exude understated luxury and are elevated with rustic touches, custom joinery by Nu Space and vintage pieces that add depth and also soften the practical framework. A living room, complete with a stone fireplace, anchors the space, inviting riders, family and guests to gather. Outside, a pergola builds on this sense of community, fostering interaction with the horses.
Georgetown Stables reflects Cadence & Co’s commitment to crafting environments where passion and practicality come together quite naturally. Every decision – architectural, material and spatial – was made in close collaboration with the client to honour the unique bond between horse and rider. The result is not just a well-executed stable but a considered design that embodies rhythm, sanctuary and a deep sense of belonging.
