Giampiero Tagliaferri LA Studio by Giampiero Tagliaferri
Giampiero Togliaferri balances functionality with creative freedom in its Los Angeles-based studio, transforming a brutalist building into a versatile space that inspires and evolves with its occupants.
Upon entering the studio, the open, three-storey section at the building’s core immediately establishes a sense of spaciousness and light. Large windows at both the front and back invite natural light to stream through, enhancing the building’s raw architectural elements while softening its harsher edges. The design draws inspiration from the work of Paul Rudolph, creating a dynamic tension between the space’s original brutalist features and the newly introduced elements, which speak to both restraint and expression.
The studio unfolds across three levels, each designed to serve a distinct purpose while maintaining a cohesive flow. The ground floor is designed as an open, welcoming environment where work and socialising coexist. A living room-style reception area features a blend of vintage and modern furniture, a large communal meeting and dining table, as well as an open kitchen. The bordeaux lacquered cabinets in the kitchen introduce a Milanese flair, while the metal island and concrete walls reinforce the studio’s industrial roots.
Upstairs, the main work area is unveiled as a vibrant, functional space. A unique sliding platform is the focal point here, enabling access to the office’s extensive library shelves. “I’m incredibly proud of how we transformed a harsh, cold environment into a bright, liveable and energising space,” says Tagliaferri. “It not only allows the team to work and feel inspired but also lets us experience the impact of our design choices firsthand.” The top floor serves as a dedicated meeting area that opens onto a spacious outdoor patio, offering a seamless transition and providing a versatile space for meetings, gatherings or simply a breath of fresh air.
Far more than just a workspace, the studio also functions as a cultural nexus for Los Angeles’ creative community.
Art and curated furniture selections are key to defining the studio’s atmosphere. Tagliaferri has chosen pieces that bridge eras and styles, from vintage Italian and Brazilian furniture to contemporary designs like the B G Robinson couch. The inclusion of artworks by LA-based artists such as Vanessa Beecroft, alongside pieces by Italian artists like Turi Simeti and rising talents like Liliane Tomasko, infuses the studio with a dynamic cultural dialogue that transcends geographic and stylistic boundaries.
Far more than just a workspace, the studio also functions as a cultural nexus for Los Angeles’ creative community. The space frequently hosts exhibitions, design talks and intimate dinners, making it a place that is always in motion. Tagliaferri embraces this constant evolution, allowing the space to reflect the fluid nature of creativity itself. Each event, each new piece of furniture or artwork, reshapes the studio’s character, ensuring it remains as lively and inspiring as the people who work within it.
The result is an environment that not only supports day-to-day activities but also stimulates the mind, encouraging innovation and collaboration. It’s a space where design is both seen and felt, where every detail, from the art on the walls to the fabric of the furnishings, contributes to an atmosphere that is at once sophisticated, eclectic and distinctly alive.
