Garden Charm – Giardino by Luigi Rosselli Architects
Informed by a series of fluid curves and an innate connection to landscape, Giardino by Luigi Rosselli Architects is an alluring structure that feels both ingrained within its locale and distinctly individual. The project embraces its garden spaces to craft a sophisticated and layered response to multi-residential living.
Situated within the Sydney suburb of Bellevue Hill – within walking distance to local shops, a golf course and a public park – the structure speaks to its harbourside location. The 10 residences are defined by their terraces and landscaped garden spaces. Responding to this connection, the apartments are proposed as light-filled and airy. The interiors feature a natural materiality that feels considered yet organic, interlocked with refined moments of earthy hues in greens, oranges and browns. Marble also appears within bathroom and kitchen spaces, adding luxurious and intimate detail, while subtle metallic accents throughout add to each home’s charm.
Italian for ‘garden’, Giardino features cascading bougainvillea – bringing colour and a delicate poise to the building’s exterior – alongside an abundance of foliage and Kentia palms that purposefully draw the eye towards the entryway, balancing the structure’s street presence. Externally, lime rendered walls, sandstone and scratched cement are foiled by the vibrant colours and lush greenery enveloping the building. Archways and curved motifs are coupled with an assortment of textures and a muted, natural palette. Speaking to the history of Bellevue Hill, Giardino echoes traditional sentiments of horizontal bands and the nautical style of curved windows, arches and corners found in local homes, which are presented here with a contemporary twist. Elements such as the sweeping staircase and black steel detailing inject moments of glamour that feel fittingly contemporary for the grand structure.
The multi-residential building is built upon a foundation of collaboration – Luigi Rosselli Architects worked closely with Handelsmann + Khaw, Dangar Barin Smith and Formspace to envision the series of homes that not only respond to their location but gracefully coexist together in a congenial embrace. Specially designed for residents to age in place, details – such as extra wide parking spaces – have also been factored into the communal and private areas of the home, seeing accessibility inform touchpoints of the anticipated structure.
