Honouring the original pool structure in place, Patchwork Architecture transforms Gonville Pool House into a unique and contemporary home. Encasing both the pool and its surrounding architectural features, the revamped dwelling retains key historical elements while fostering new opportunities for connection.

The vision for Gonville Pool House focuses on transforming an abandoned public swimming facility into a liveable dwelling for a growing family. The aim of the architect was to blend past and present, resulting in a residence with its own distinct character, reminiscent of its 1912 origins. By converting the six lanes of the swimming pool into an accessible orchard, the surrounding structure was reimagined into interconnected living spaces, maintaining echoes of its playful past. Through a contemporary lens, remaining features, such as the steel truss details, help to define the property and guide movement throughout.

Utilising materials such as plywood, steel and concrete underscores its utilitarian design, yet it’s the sleek assembly of these parts that lends the home its contemporary appeal.

Initially acquired from the council by Ross Mitchell-Anyon, renowned for his restoration of dilapidated public spaces, his goal was to revive the site and restore its significance within the community. In this case, the plan never materialised, leading to the site’s adoption by its current owners. Originally from Wellington, their unconventional vision, coupled with a deep understanding of the site, resulted in the decision to revitalise the pool and convert the surrounding area into a landscaped oasis.

Needing a space rooted in simplicity and functionality, the resulting home prioritises thermal efficiency and also draws inspiration from the artistic style of David Hockney. Utilising materials such as plywood, steel and concrete underscores its utilitarian design, yet it’s the sleek assembly of these parts that lends the home its contemporary appeal. Blurring the line between old and new, the design doesn’t imitate but honours the site’s former narrative. Now serving as both a private residence and temporary lodging for Airbnb guests or visiting performers, it embodies versatility and hospitality.

Throughout, each structure has been revitalised, and the spirit of Gonville Pool House has been reinterpreted with vibrant colours and dynamic features. The close collaboration between the client and Patchwork Architecture breathes new life into the building, fostering an atmosphere of openness, connection and playfulness.
