Greenway Residence by Smitharc Architecture + Interiors
Situated within a leafy, historic neighbourhood in Dallas, Greenway Residence by Smitharc Architecture + Interiors is an interconnected, dynamic family base that oozes striking contemporary style.
Designing within the established neighbourhood, the architects used the low-slung form of the site’s original dwelling and its mid-century neighbours as a basis for the street-facing presentation of the home. Much like the neighbourhood, which features clusters of homes adjoined to common parklands, the building is conceived as a series of living spaces connected to landscaped courtyards and outdoor areas, including a zen garden and a pool patio. Further into the plan, the architecture extends upwards with a double-height pavilion providing a central axis.
Honed grey limestone walls lend a sense of reverence to the architecture, accentuated on the street face by perforated bronze gates. This limestone has been paired with bleached cypress, softening the visual mass of the home and adding to the linear texture. Inside, pops of colour bring a vibrant, artisanal look – especially in the kitchen and living room, where swirling blue ceilings and lacquered blue cabinetry reference the ripples of the pool outside. This splash of colour is balanced and enriched by bronze fittings and furnishings in both rooms.
As with many post-2020 houses, spacious home offices were high on the homeowners’ list of requirements. Both are entrepreneurs who spend a good deal of time in virtual meetings, which makes comfort and aesthetics equally important. The husband’s office doubles as a display suite for his Ferrari collection, making for an impressive Zoom call background. The gallery-like space reads like a high-end vehicle dealership, with a pair of leather chairs artfully arranged, slanted large-scale tile flooring and angled strip lighting overhead.
The wife’s office is an elevated space encased in glazed walls, with a view of treetops in one direction and a sculptural light feature by Romanian artist Andreea Braescue creating a prominent feature in the other, where it hangs within the double-height adjoining atrium. The aesthetic is minimal, with a palette of taupe and glossy white designer furnishings creating a sleek and airy space.
Also upstairs is the couple’s bedroom suite, which is complete with a roof deck, private gym and a spacious walk-in closet and dressing room adorned in white scalloped marble tile floors, glittering laser cut brass walls and soft pink furnishings with matching marble counters. Reflecting the personalities of the owners, this sculptural home dares to be different while its architectural forms retain a timeless yet contemporary elegance.
