Hacienda Granada by Working Holiday Studio
With interiors by Working Holiday Studio, this Los Angeles design home and showroom emanates a contemporary Mexican glow, flavoured with a smattering of Scandinavian simplicity.
When Whitney Brown and Carlos Naude of Working Holiday Studio came across this 1960s home in Granada Hills, they were taken by its strong mid-century bones despite its original interior spaces being dark and compartmentalised. The home is part of a collection of curated properties that make up one arm of the couple’s multidisciplinary creative studio. These can be used for film and photography shoots as well as acting as show homes for collections of designer furniture. Hacienda Granada is currently given over to the former, with its curvaceous spaces and warm palette making a beautiful backdrop for golden hour photography.
Once two separate spaces, the now-open dining and kitchen also features a soft, forest green plaster wall, which anchors the palette of creamy yellows, lustrous timbers and terracotta tones.
One of the couple’s early moves was to create arched entrance ways throughout the home, which both opened up the spaces to more light and helped to create the desired hacienda aesthetic. This was added to by wavy iron balustrades on the stair and upper railing and handmade Mexican brick flooring laid in the entranceway and kitchen and dining space. These floors seem to allude to sun-drenched courtyards and patio spaces, lending an earthy feel to the downstairs rooms.
Once two separate spaces, the now-open dining and kitchen also features a soft, forest green plaster wall, which anchors the palette of creamy yellows, lustrous timbers and terracotta tones. This green continues throughout the home in the form of rugs and richly textured stone furniture pieces, lending a cooling contrast that balances beautifully with the home’s golden hues. Warmly toned timber millwork creates a soft, natural look in the kitchen and bathrooms, with timber also featuring in the eclectic mix of designer cabinetry, drawers and chairs seen throughout the home and the solid wood table in the kitchen.
Adjacent to the kitchen and dining rooms, a formal living room is complete with a whitewashed brick fireplace and a collection of sculptural seats encircling a feature marble coffee table, which rests on a trio of green globes. This artful arrangement has a sense of Scandinavian hygge, calling for quiet moments with a book or a gentle conversation.
An optical wonder, the checkerboard brown and white tiled bathroom is a playful departure from the easy, breezy rooms below. This is a minimalist homage to the maximalist tiled bathrooms seen in authentic haciendas and creates a very photogenic room complete with a circular window with a snipped view of the garden. A further bathroom features ornate gold and brown bird-adorned wallpapering illuminated with brass fittings and detailing. With every element carefully considered, this home has been skilfully curated to create a sense of languid elegance in every room.
