A sweeping, wave-like roof cascades over this oceanfront home, echoing its coastal surroundings and framing the refined, cohesive interiors crafted by Birdblack Design.

Dubbed Hai Lang – meaning ‘wave’ in the homeowners’ native Mandarin – the grey-blue, aluminium-clad roofline forms the home’s most striking feature, with every other element designed to flow harmoniously around it. For Birdblack Design, who collaborated with JIH Building Design during the planning stages, this vision translated into a restrained exterior palette of white cladding, softened by vertical timber screening that adds subtle texture to the upper floors.

Entry into Hai Lang Residence is through a textured liquid-metal door, introducing a consistent, patinated copper material that threads through the interior design.

This opens to a generous double-height foyer illuminated by twin Mondoluce pendants and crowned by a curved mezzanine that spans the space above.

Making up part of the open-plan living zone, the kitchen features a copper-clad island, sculptural in presence and inspired by the form of a boat. A matching copper rangehood ties the room together. For added practicality, a hidden wet kitchen conceals cooking aromas and dishes, maintaining the minimalist aesthetic throughout.

Clad in handmade Japanese tile, the fireplace’s dimensional form catches the light, its surface appearing to glitter in the interior.

French vanilla marble flooring brings warmth and elegance to the living zone, seamlessly continuing into the alfresco dining area. In the living room, a floating liquid-metal bench adds a point of visual interest, while a four-sided fireplace anchors the space and visually connects the adjacent rooms. The dining area embraces a minimalist approach, allowing for table arrangements and decor to add colour and personality. Above the circular table, hand-blown frosted glass pendants echo the home’s gentle curves, while a sheer curtain conceals LED lighting that bathes the space in a subtle glow.

Though the roofline itself cannot be seen from inside, its influence is ever-present, shaping the interior with curves and artfully framing views of the sea beyond.

Powder rooms evoke the glamour of a high-end hotel, where warm metals, richly veined marble, bespoke tiling and luscious curves create a sense of luxury. On the first floor of this multigenerational home, the bedrooms continue this attention to detail with custom wall treatments that add colour and personality. This is balanced by a calming, understated palette in the ensuite bathrooms, each featuring curved, metal-clad vanities.

The attic primary suite is the ultimate elevated escape, hugged by the sweeping curves of the roofline overhead. These arcs bend above the bed, with a custom wall of black and gold floral wallpaper creating an intricate focal point in the space. Reeded glass doors lead to a spacious dressing room and the main ensuite, where gold-veined marble walls and cabinetry continue the theme of refined opulence.
