Hali Rugs Launches We Live in Your World Collaboration
Hali Rugs explores the lives of Australian creatives at home with We Live in Your World, a new series that begins with the terrace house of Melbourne interior designer Brahman Perera.
Inspired by the beauty of handmade rugs he encountered on his global travels, Ian Swart founded Hali Rugs in 1979. Over the following four decades, Hali has expanded from its original showroom in South Yarra in Melbourne to six locations. Today, the brand is led by Swart’s children, Dan and Rebecca, who have made it their mission to carry on the rich family tradition of creating rugs with craftsmanship at their heart. Each Hali piece is handmade ethically by skilled artisans, championing quality throughout every stage – from material sourcing to production.
Hali’s philosophy centres on weaving narratives through thoughtfully curated interiors, transforming those spaces in the process. To highlight that vision, the company has launched We Live in Your World, an intimate exploration of Australian designers’ inspirations and environments. The series debuts with the West Melbourne terrace house of interior designer Brahman Perera, celebrated for his textured, emotive approach to spaces.
“We Live in Your World celebrates how Australia’s leading designers create spaces that tell their personal stories,” says Dan Swart, Hali’s managing director. “Our working partnership with Brahman makes him a natural choice to kickstart this initiative, aligned in the understanding that thoughtfully composed spaces evoke a feeling – that irreplaceable sense of home.”
Perera’s dedication to timeless, high-quality pieces features prominently across his work, with his artistry spanning retail, hospitality and residential realms. Establishing his own practice in 2020, Perera draws inspiration from art, his surroundings and his diverse upbringing. The designer also firmly believes homes should balance memories and functionality. “I think the joy in a rug is that it can provide both a bold statement or it can be a beautiful background character,” he says. “Sometimes it’s purely the focus and is about texture and comfort. Sometimes it’s there as what I would call a landing zone for a collection or a landscape of furniture and styling.”
When asked whether he would design a space around a rug or add it last, Perera acknowledges it’s not an easy question to answer. “I do like my rugs to fit the room quite neatly. Sometimes it’s dependent on the rug sizes, but I also quite like layering them. There are a few things you can play with, but I do like the rugs to feel like they’re grounding a space. I like parts of the rug that we can see and appreciate and parts that need to flow under furniture arrangements as well.”
Perera selected distinctive Hali pieces for his home, including the Moghul Ivory Multi, which he praises for its heritage sensibility and beautifully muted colours. He layered this with the Art Deco-inspired Denver Ivory Beige, which incorporates New Zealand wool with cocoon silk highlights. The designer was also drawn to the Shabargan Olive, hand-knotted by Uzbek artisans and featuring traditional vegetable dyes, and the plush-pile Taza Cream, crafted from premium New Zealand wool and with hand-carved textural grooves.
We Live in Your World will continue to spotlight Australia’s most inspiring creatives, celebrating the enduring beauty of spaces that they have shaped.
