Merging Design Sensibilities – Hanna Hygge
Inspired by the rustic colours and textures found in the Australian landscape, Hanna Hygge harmoniously interweaves the Danish concept of hygge – a word used by Danish and Norwegians to represent cosiness and comfort – with the casual Australian lifestyle. Celebrating stylish homeware and lifestyle goods designed with an Australian sensibility, each product is imbued with a refined warmth.
When Alexandra Hanna and Dirk du Toit first unveiled their Melbourne-based homeware and lifestyle brand Hanna Hygge, they ensured each piece was crafted with considered integrity. Having met whilst working in the architecture and design industry, Alex had envisioned starting a homewares business inspired by the Danish concept of hygge but informed by the Australian character. She recruited the expertise of friend and local designer Dirk to create the brand and design each product with these intentions in mind. Hanna Hygge comprises an assortment of thoughtfully designed products that range from stonewashed linen from Portugal, bespoke scents from Sydney, stylish tableware from Sri Lanka and timber serving and decorator items from Melbourne.
Conscious design underpins the entirety of the label, where consumers can expect a complete range of homeware essentials that don’t conform to fast trends or competitor brands. Timber goods are designed, individually assembled and hand-finished by Melbourne-based Dutoit Studio, whilst the bespoke scent collection is hand-blended, poured and produced in-house by Sydney-based perfumer Ainslie Walker. Table linen is stonewashed in Portugal for an exceptionally soft hand feel and gentle drape, while bed linen is woven, cut and stitched in Portugal from 100% European grown flax, and porcelain dining is hand-glazed and produced in Sri Lanka.
Sustainability is a key pillar informing the design and is paramount to the brand. Chosen for their quality and provenance, Hanna Hygge sees the coming together of environmentally conscious manufacturers from some of the finest production regions in the world, including Sri Lanka, Portugal and Australia. These carefully selected manufacturers have contributed to Hanna Hygge’s success and – coupled with limited-run production, where quality-first homeware essentials are front and centre – ultimately offers consumers a serious point of difference in an otherwise semi-saturated market. Hanna Hygge’s limited-run production model also allows the business to thrive in areas of product control, quality and design that ultimately leads to its unique offering to consumers.
Synonymous with the brand is the rustic linen colour palette featured throughout. The natural Australian landscape remains the key inspiration for the tonalities and textures used for all product ranges – expect hues such as cicada, bark, banksia and outback to feature. Defined by comfort, the bed linen collection is stonewashed and woven, cut and stitched by a family-owned textile mill in Portugal – a manufacturer that has been spinning bedding for over 70 years. OEKO-TEX certified, the mill promotes socially responsible working conditions and adheres to best practice environmental standards. The Hanna Hygge bed linen range is available in sheets, pillowcases, bed covers and cushions whilst the table linen collection comes in both napkins and tablecloths.
With each product designed in Melbourne with the Australian point of view in mind, Hanna Hygge plays in a creative space of thoughtful homewares, executed in such a way that remains minimal and stylish, without wavering in quality.
