A Home Reunified – Hargrave Terrace by CM Studio
Bringing together the disparate rooms of an existing terrace home in Paddington, the many parts that make up Hargrave Terrace are stitched back together into the intentional whole it was originally envisioned to be. CM Studio combines a celebration of key historical elements with a fresh contemporary approach to breathe a sense of grandeur back into the home.
Befitting of its location, Hargrave Terrace sits comfortably as a grand terrace home in Sydney’s Paddington. The terrace style residence is both a contributory and important reminder of the area’s past and the architectural language that comprised its inception. The early 1920s saw the original home split into four apartments and remained as such until its most recent custodians. Reinstating a sense of purpose, the disparate parts and the varied narrative of each apartment needed to be stripped and brought together under the one roof, recreating its original intent as a singular home. CM Studio both celebrates the existing and the present by restoring and highlighting its heritage and allowing the contemporary insertions to create a sense of balance.
Built by BAU Group Construction together with Saltwater Joinery, Hargrave Terrace is stitched back together through a contemporary addition. The new works conjure a home of generous and grand proportions for its current family, where detailed attention has been given to a seamless connection between the old and the new. Approached in a layered way, each floor represents a fusion of the eras, all to their own varying degree to ensure a subtle transition. While the lower floor adopts a more contemporary approach, as the ascent upward occurs however, more and more of the traditional and heritage features are expressed. Crowning at the top level, where the scale and detail is expressed as originally intended.

Throughout, the materiality does not speak so much to a specific period but more to a classic and timeless palette of surfaces and finishes. Representing its transition over time and through the many hands and people who have lived in and contributed their own narrative to the spaces, the finishes speak more as the unbiased foundations. The house is enlivened with the extensive use of white and bright elements, while muted timber adds both warmth and ties the home and its contemporary insertions back to a sense of craft. Furniture, artwork, lighting and objects, styled by Alexandra Gordan, then add additional personality to each space, as an expression of its use and the family that live within it.
