Harmonious Refractions
Overlooking the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, this immaculate Point Piper apartment by Studiojos called for subtle contrast and harmony within.
Rather than directly referencing the colours and forms of the harbour, the team at Studiojos has chosen materials and fabrics that echo the dynamic nature of the view, creating a subdued counterpoint to its stark colour and light. Rich blue-green fusion quartzite, with its mottled veining, plays the hero, appearing across kitchen benchtops, splashbacks and the dining table, as well as in showers and vanities. In the kitchen, the stone is grounded by dusky timber-panelled custom cabinetry, where rounded edges and finely resolved details lend both softness and an air of formality – qualities that recur throughout the apartment.

The dining table extends from the kitchen island, reaching out to connect with the living room. Framed by windows on two sides, this welcoming space soaks in the light of the harbour, while furnishings and fabrics in warm browns and creamy off-whites create a muted palette that allows the view to take precedence. Underfoot, a custom-made rug from India presents topographical curves that reference the patterning of the kitchen stone while recalling the movement of waves. A walnut-toned, amorphous media cabinet, created using Elton Group burl-wood veneer, reads as a dynamic artwork when the television is not in use.
In the main bathroom, the textural quartzite is paired with sleek metal tapware and an industrial-style towel rail, while dappled glass allows light to filter through to the shower and toilet rooms. The vanity’s form recalls the modern yet classical language of the kitchen, with rounded detailing and a panelled mirror above that wraps the edges of the wall.
Storage was an important consideration in this relatively compact apartment, delivered through integrated cabinetry across multiple areas. In the bedroom, this cabinetry becomes a key feature, with Art Deco-inspired panelled wardrobes lining the walls and inset cut-outs forming bedside nooks and shelves. Sheer curtains invite in the harbour breeze, lending the room a shifting lightness, while rich velvets and cool linens bring depth and tactility.
Joss Knightly and the Studiojos team custom-designed and commissioned several key furniture pieces for the home, including the velvet bench seat, square-topped ottomans and the enveloping cream armchair in the living room, which faces the incredible view. With not a detail out of place, the highly considered and customised design ensures the apartment feels as special as its location.
