Local Melbourne designer Coco Flip have launched their latest lighting collection Honey at Melbourne Design Week. Handcrafted by Melbourne artisans, Honey is the next step in the studio’s design journey that sees Coco Flip thoughtfully exploring the potential of materials and organic forms, enlivened by a signature playfulness.
The collection is comprised of a wall sconce, table lamp and pendant light, each piece taking inspiration from the humble honey dipper’s rhymic curves. The stepped geometric silhouette is also described as a nod to a stylised Art Deco sensibility. From this convergence of simple domesticity and one of the most recognisable, highly stylised eras in design, a new aesthetic emerges that is at once contemporary and nostalgic.
In addition to the striking silhouette, Honey is defined by the attention to detail evident in the fact that each piece is hand made in collaboration with Bendigo Pottery, Charles Sandford and glass artist Amanda Dziedzic. By working closely with these artisans, Coco Flip not only achieve a superior quality object, but they have created a design that actively celebrates the skill of these local makers.
The collection is comprised of a wall sconce, table lamp and pendant light, each piece taking inspiration from the humble honey dipper’s rhymic curves.
The two forms – base and glass – that make up each light are united by their tactility, their organic yet stylised curves, creating a whole from two distinct parts each defined by its material. The bases are made from slip-cast ceramic stoneware or hand-turned American white oak, offering a number of glazes and finishes. The weight and substance of these bases form a foundation for the delicacy of white or pink hand blown glass, which provides a soft, diffuse glow.
A sculptural statement piece that celebrates Melbourne’s local artisans, Honey represents the next exciting chapter for Coco Flip.
Honey is exhibited as part of a group show called Material Thought at Modern Times that runs from March 14th to 24th before the official design industry launch at Denfair in Melbourne from June 20th to 22nd.
