With the ambition to create optimum impact with a simple approach, House in Kensington retains the original character of its heritage by reworking the existing bones into a contemporary form. Architect George crafts a home inspired by the owners’ unique expression and the building’s history.

Originally built in 1905, House in Kensington stands as a reminder of the Federation era. With an intact heritage stable outbuilding in place, the home is a testament to the era it was constructed in. Whilst the home called for an attentive eye across its internal and external renovation, retaining the original charm of the residence and its historical detailing was an important part of its continued legacy. Adopting a personal approach, the renovation was inspired by artwork painted by the owners and allows the home to serve as a project of self-expression.

By removing the existing separation of the home’s spaces, a series of more openly connected rooms is created –enhancing flow and embedding a contemporary experience. The transition between inside and out also played a vital role in opening the home and blurring the existing boundary between the two environments. Furthermore, improving access to natural light and ventilation reinforces the connection to the surrounds whilst reducing the need for excess power consumption – an element important to the residence’s functionality.

The home balances a neutral foundation palette with a colourful collection of treasures and paintings. Becoming part gallery for the owners’ work and items collected over the years, there is also a clear retention of the familiar sensibility of what makes a home. Through a careful consideration of texture and form, light animates the interior of the home – bringing artwork to life and elevating the lived experience.

With a measured approach, House in Kensington aims to show how contemporising and embedding sustainability into existing heritage homes is often better than a complete reworking. Architect George combines the distinct expression of the home’s owners with a respectful capture of the residence’s history.
