Expanding upon the existing structure, a new extension crafted from rammed earth firmly anchors House on the Hill in place. Robson Rak takes cues from the home’s role as a hub for fostering connections, using this as inspiration for the design and construction of the new addition.

Driven by their love for the location, the owners of House on the Hill sought a larger and enduring sanctuary. Collaborating with Robson Rak, the aim was to expand upon the existing mud-brick structure that was built by the owners over the past 40 years, seamlessly integrating a more permanent and suitably sized residence to engage with the surrounding environment. Maintaining a sense of flow between indoor and outdoor spaces was important, with framed views immersing the dwelling within its setting. Situated in the serene Mornington Peninsula, the design prioritised cultivating a feeling of calm and disconnection.

Choosing rammed earth as the main structural material represents a progression from the original elements, complemented by thinly framed glazed sections. The interplay between textured and smooth surfaces also creates a balance, ensuring the home harmonises with its surroundings. Positioned amid undulating hills on one side and established green forest on the other, the location exudes a natural presence and tranquillity that required preservation. Serving as both an elevated retreat and a place for rejuvenation, the dwelling’s seclusion from neighbouring residences and the city is integral to its narrative, which is cherished by the owners. Maintaining clear sightlines as one moves through the internal spaces further enhances this sense of connection.

Drawing inspiration from the rich, saturated hues in the nearby forest landscape, the material palette reflects a deep connection to nature. Despite the proximity to the beach, the focus is on the lush density of the forest, influencing the selection of textures and tones. To ensure the home stands out amid its environment, pigmented concrete was used in the foundations to define the outer silhouette. Softening the transition between the crisp, rectilinear form and the expansive terrain, natural plant species are strategically integrated into the immediate landscape. This balance of elements creates an environment that is sensitive and respectful, allowing the owners to continue enjoying and inhabiting the site for years to come.

House on the Hill was born from the desire to integrate the residence with its natural surroundings. Robson Rak combines materials and elevated detailing to imbue the home with a robustness that complements the site while also infusing the conveniences and refinement of urban living into this rural location.
