Set amid rolling hills, and with the Catskills Mountains resplendent in the distance, this upstate New York home by HGX Design stretches across its ridgeline location, merging with the landscape through a considered palette of natural timber and glass.

Created as a retreat for extended family to gather, the floor plan of this home is one-room deep with a high stud, providing bounteous opportunities for enjoyment of the view from every space. An internal material palette of timber floors and neutral walls lends a sense of calm and allows the uninterrupted landscape vistas to provide the colour scheme – complemented by the homeowner’s collection of art pieces, which provide elements of surprise throughout the home.

A free-flowing spatial plan in the living zone extends the sense of fluency introduced by the extensive glazing and adds to the relaxed, resort-like atmosphere of the home.

A free-flowing spatial plan in the living zone extends the sense of fluency introduced by the glazing and adds to the relaxed, resort-like atmosphere of the home. This connects to a sheltered al fresco dining and deck space, which is visible on entry, immediately connecting visitors with the view on arrival. This central area is bookended by a master suite at one end and guest accommodation at the other, providing opportunities to recharge away from the social hub of the home. While bedrooms obviously require doors, there is a similar sense of flow in these spaces, created by partial walls that allow for the placement of furniture and bathrooms, with windows on both sides to bring light and airiness.

A considered lighting plan accentuates the separation between the public and private zones of the house, with artificial lighting falling away in the hallways that connect these areas, and both natural and artificial light used to illuminate spaces where people come together. Equally, sunlight injected through high-level windows creates shadow patterns on walls as visitors travel through the spaces, lending visual interest and zones of reflection.

When seen on approach, the home is striking for its minimal, elongated box-like form, accentuated by integrated guttering in the flat roof.

The material palette of the home’s exterior pulls from the landscape, with pale cedar cladding producing a timeless sense of elegance. This tone continues indoors with wood-panelled bedroom walls, richly grained timber kitchen cabinetry and moody, darker finishes in the bathrooms. Rugs, bedding and upholstery fabrics are minimal and neutral in colour, again giving precedence to the landscape and the artwork.

The home is situated central to a 35-hectare estate, which also includes a pool area and a series of outbuildings, extending the sense of the property as a resort. When seen on approach, the home is striking for its minimal, elongated box-like form, accentuated by integrated guttering in the flat roof. To provide this same seamlessness indoors, blinds are hidden in upper pockets in the glazed walls. These serve as examples of the extensive attention to detail exercised in the design of the home, which seems to softly lie across the land it occupies with a dreamy sense of contentment.
