The creation of Articolo Home emerged from founder and design director Nicci Kavals’ personal pursuit for furniture pieces that embodied the brand’s signature aesthetic. “I always imagined living within the world or aesthetic of Articolo, which is layered, textured, quiet yet contemporary and timeless,” she says. “I design from the heart and create from my imagination.”
Wanting to offer small furniture pieces that resonate and align with Articolo Studio’s style, Kavals envisioned a collection that exuded both refinement and functionality. “Striking a balance between function and form is an art,” she says. “I wanted to create four forms and then play with the materiality to see how the personality of each piece changed from one material to another.” The Flare side tables, for example, possess enduring appeal and elegance through their timber veneer and delicate bronze accents. However, when crafted in burnished brass, the same piece becomes bolder and sculptural. Drawing inspiration from European heritage fashion houses, the earthy hues – including latte, olive, burgundy and camel – also evoke sophistication and warmth.
Central to the collection’s ethos is the use of handworked natural materials, celebrating the inherent beauty and craftsmanship of each element. “Each piece tells a story of human artistry and dedication,” says Kavals. From hand-finished brass to Italian veneers and exquisite leathers, every detail bears the imprint of skilled artisans, ensuring both quality and authenticity.
Choosing local artisans and craftspeople was an important aspect of Articolo Home’s development as a brand. “We have sought out the best upholstery, metalwork, woodworking and straw marquetry artisans in Melbourne,” says Kavals. Collaborating closely with these talented individuals, the design process involved pushing the boundaries of materials and techniques to achieve a refined simplicity.
Balancing artistry with functionality was also key. “Our commitment to craftsmanship and artistry never compromises functionality. Furniture is meant to be lived with and used daily.” Each piece is engineered to ensure ease of use and durability, reflecting the studio’s dedication to creating designs that enhance daily living.
