A clever new range of distinctive products from contemporary lighting specialist Mondoluce pulls double duty, offering distinctive lights with noise-absorbing properties.

The purpose of all lighting is inherently functional: to illuminate. But recently, leading lighting designers from around the world have been doubling down on this functionality by introducing a cutting-edge new technology: acoustic lighting. Acoustic lights aren’t merely a light source: they also absorb sound, creating a harmonious environment and removing the need for structural changes to improve a space’s acoustics. The innovative products are particularly useful in areas with hard reflective surfaces or that are fitted with irregular geometric shapes that enhance or echo noises.

The aim of these acoustic lights is to achieve ‘acoustic comfort’, a state of wellbeing created when the noise in any given environment is limited. In particularly loud spaces, sound-absorbing objects – in this case, lighting – are installed to muffle or soak up noise. Not only are these lights multifunctional, but they’re designed with an emphasis on visual appeal and versatility.

Mondoluce, a designer lighting retailer at the forefront of the latest lighting technologies, is bringing these innovations to the Australian market with the launch of its new acoustic lighting collection. Its range of pioneering acoustic lights encompasses floor lamps, large-scale suspension pendants, and ceiling and wall lights, adaptable to any space, from lobbies and boardrooms to homes and restaurants.

The new products have been tested with sounds of varying frequencies to register their capacity for noise reduction.

The new products have been tested with sounds of varying frequencies to register their capacity for noise reduction. For example, the Layers Acoustic pendant by Italian company Axo Light reduces noise by up to 47 per cent. This sizeable suspended fixture not only emits light and cuts down on noise, but its sculptural design is customisable to ensure smooth installation. The brand’s Bell pendant and ceiling light both offer impressive sound absorption thanks to their pongee fabric. Lively colourways – including red, yellow and white – and a range of sizes cement their suitability for both residential and commercial applications.

Equally colourful is the whimsical Eden floor lamp range by Rotaliana. The collection comprises oversized, standing leaf shapes – in hues like sunflower yellow, sprout green and rust – which feature soft padding and fabric lining that work to improve acoustics within a space. More refined in aesthetics is Axo Light’s Skirt, a fashion-inspired pendant whose fabric – in Fortuny-like pleats – has sound-absorbing properties.

The Hush Acoustic pendant, designed by David Trubridge in partnership with PLN Group, has been created to soften sound in workspaces and communal areas.

For minimalist spaces, the appeal of Axo Light’s U-Light range rests in its deliberately simple design. An aluminium ring is embedded with an LED light and an acoustic panel that works to reduce noise by up to 49 per cent. Available in both a pendant and wall or ceiling light, its spartan appearance means it can be installed across a multitude of spaces. Meanwhile, the Hush Acoustic pendant, designed by David Trubridge in partnership with PLN Group, has been created to soften sound in workspaces and communal areas. The lightweight pendant’s function is on full display in its overlapping, semi-rigid acoustic panels.
