Nurtured by Nature – James Bond House by Studio LMD
James Bond House draws from modernist principles to compose a home of linear proportions that align naturally with the surrounds. Studio LMD together with Epoch Architecture and Robert Eyres Building Design propose a calming retreat, where neutral tones and open apertures create connections beyond the bounding walls of the home.
In its Chandler milieu, James Bond House sits as a welcomed and low-lying addition to the landscape. As an unexpected insertion amongst its removed and natural surround, the living elements balance the crisp and linear lines of the built form to offer a refined shelter by contrast. Taking inspiration from its setting, the interior design by Studio LMD is imagined as a place of respite and recharge, an escape from the everyday and a portal into another world. The focus on simplicity and embedding a warmth throughout ensures each of the spaces feels connected and part of a greater whole. With architecture by Epoch Architecture and Robert Eyres Building Design and interiors by Studio LMD, the resulting home draws on shared principles, with a collective attention to detail and rigour evident throughout.
Being able to gather and disperse was key to the planning, with an element of flexibility built into the design. The mostly monochromatic palette was an integral facilitator to the operability of the home and the ability for it to adjust to different groups as needed. The reductionist approach to materiality intentionally engages with light and emphasises the scale of the spaces, making it feel more generous. Meanwhile, the selections of furniture, lighting, and artwork all aid in maintaining a sense of openness and increase access to the surrounding gardens.
Built by QLD Builders and Renovation Group, James Bond House celebrates its location by reinforcing place through clear visual access from within. Living connected to the surrounds was an important part of the narrative of the home and having a level of transparency both from approach and from within helps complete that story. Each opening acts as a portal of sorts to the surrounding landscape and becomes a calming backdrop to the rituals of everyday life. While breaks in the solidity of the façade allow for views out, moveable elements make way for natural ventilation to pass through the home and naturally cool the spaces.
As an unexpected insertion amongst its removed and natural surround, the living elements balance the crisp and linear lines of the built form to offer a refined shelter by contrast.
Through an interweaving with the gardens, James Bond House sits as a reclusive element in the landscape. Together, Studio LMD, Epoch Architecture and Robert Eyres Building Design create a meaningful binding to context.
